Gabriel Zertuche was named Ballet San Antonio’s Artistic Director in 2012 where he immediately widened the companies creative repertoire with critically acclaimed new works and the addition of internationally accomplished artists. Zertuche has been described as “the classic artiste preserving the love of dance in our city.”

As Ballet Master and Resident Choreographer during 2008 and 2011 Zertuche choreographed several ballets for the company, among them Frida Kahlo, Zenith, and Suzaki Dances, in which critics declared “a hands-down winner.”

Zertuche’s first full-length ballet, Dracula, premiered in October 2011. The San Antonio Express-News called it a “meticulously staged, choreographed and beautifully danced” production, and “a big accomplishment for Ballet San Antonio.”

In 2012-2013 season, Zertuche premiered The Nutcracker in collaboration with the San Antonio Symphony. Jasmina Wellinghoff from the Express-News lauded the “winter wonderland.” He also premiered Love Triangle in collaboration with SOLI Chamber Ensemble as part of the San Antonio Symphony’s Brahms Festival and Scheherazade. “Beautifully choreographed by artistic director Gabriel Zertuche and performed by dancers in top form, [Scheherazade] charms, it sizzles, it amuses, and it ebbs and flows in harmony with Rimsky-Korsakov’s luscious score.” San Antonio Express-News.

In 2013 he brought in Ben Stevenson to set Cinderella, on the company. Mr. Stevenson sat on the company's advisory board shortly following the Cinderella production.

In the 2014-2015 season, Zertuche hired internationally renowned Houston Ballet principal dancer, Amy Fote to join the artistic staff as Ballet Mistress. That season also marked the companies premier as the resident company of the newly built Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Zertuche expanded the companies repertoire to include Ben Stevenson’s Romeo and Juliet accompanied by the San Antonio Symphony, and George Balanchine’s Donizetti Variations.

Zertuche continued to choreograph critically acclaimed ballets throughout his time as Artistic Director for the company.

Zertuche was commissioned to choreograph for The Opera San Antonio’s production of Carmen which premiered in October of 2016 at the Tobin Center with music performed by the San Antonio Symphony.
